MIDWEEK - Addicted to Analyzing

pillsDarin and Aimee have an interesting discussion about how easy we Christians tend to bring judgment down on ourselves for taking part in anything that could be considered “self medicating.” Most Christians have been confronted at least one time in their life about their consumption of things like caffeine, Nicotine, Alcohol or any other mind altering substance. Many of us fall into the trap of over analyzing our every motive with everything we do. We worry excessively whether or not we’re self medicating or slowly becoming addicted to something. Are we running from our problems? Are we rejecting what God has for us and relying on something else? Are being mastered by something other than God? Are we not finding enough joy in Christ that we have to substitute it with medication? These questions can drive us crazy and deplete our happiness in the wild.

"when is it self medicating and when is it just enjoying your life? "Amy said and .Darin said.. "I'm going to be honest with what I do" I think Darin and Amy's comment put together is balance and balance seems to have an ability to be true.I so relate with Amy. "coffee's good coffee's bad.. it's true we have toooo much information.. like: TMI desease. I'm gonna go have a strong cup of coffee and just Live and Love.. and I do think we are bored.. at least I've been lately. Church activities filled up so much of my time.. Darin quoted Yoda.. yes, the little grn guy from star wars.. "Don't think.. FEEL".. live and love, live and love.. loved the pod cast.. I'm afraid to get in the pool cause I don't want anyone to see me in a bathing suit.. uhgg.. scary..:) Thanks you two!

Here I go again: Proverbs 31: 6 & 7; “Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish; let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.” “Self-medicating” is all that most people have ever had throughout history. No worry, God understands that when we suffer we need a break. Religion is at the root of those who judge and are critical this type of behavior. Yes, moderation is important but what I think is moderate for someone else it would be excess. I drink whiskey and I can drink much more than my friends. They simply drink less and we all find that place that works for us. Are we self-medicating? Heck yea! Jesus came; “eating and drinking” and He was called a glutton and drunkard.

My 22 year old son and I were talking the other day and I found it very interesting. We were talking about how so many people he knows smoke weed now -- more than usual. We discussed how pretty much everyone takes some kind of drug. He commented that his grandpa (my dad, who is a preacher) almost treats the bible like a drug. He reads it so much and feels the need to read it for so long every day... My son commented that at least it produced good results as opposed to some "drugs". I thought that was an interesting observation.

Hm, the substitute for buzz words for christians would probably be: Halleluja and Amen...! As I travelled in Bolivia there was one theory that got confirmed for me once more...the more dirt you eat from little on, the less you get sick. I had stomach problems all the times while I did not even eat on the street stalls or so. When you see how they treat their food on the market (and thats where the average person gets it from, even the "better" ones) you stop thinking about it or you will not eat...Most of them dont have a problem...

Now it is out, Darin! You do take medication for your depression (earlier podcast); just not bi-polar medication. Seriously, that is great if it works for you (I know the other would destroy your better times as well as relieve the depression). I enjoy my coffee and take antidepressants. I have family members who have been alcoholics so they choose abstinence; that medication would be poison FOR THEM. It all gets back to each living their own life. I do belive though that we do have to think of others in our choices, though, not out of religious rule observance but out of love for them. I would not drink in front of my family members for that reason. Don't we have to "think" a bit about the consequences of our choices? Maybe I have a problem with thinking too much; I need to get swimming!

we shouldn't self medicate where we actually feel good or feel pleasure...instead let pharmacists jack up prices on chemicals that cause us to feel nothing and enjoy nothing at all! makes sense to me. (note the above statement is sarcasm.)

What draws me to listen to you guys is that you are honestly human. When Christians try to stop being human is when we start reading the Ted Haggard stories and such. I get the creeps around what I term 'plastic Jesus weirdos.' I love people who are honestly human. I think there is still some misunderstanding among Christians in seeing Jesus on earth as more divine than human.
